Instead of a generic chatbot that guesses answers, Maca Chat builds a search index from your website content and answers based on what actually appears on your site. The result is a digital assistant that helps visitors find the right information, around the clock, without you having to answer the same questions over and over again.

How it works

  1. Install the plugin in WordPress
  2. Enter your OpenAI API key (stored encrypted on your server)
  3. Choose which content should be indexed — pages, posts, extra knowledge
  4. Build the search index — automatically when content changes or manually
  5. Activate the chat — as a floating widget or embedded on any page

Visitors ask a question → the plugin searches the index → relevant text excerpts are sent to OpenAI → the answer is based on your content.

Answers based on your content (RAG)

Maca Chat uses Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). A local search index is built from your website content, and for each question only the most relevant text snippets are sent to the AI. This gives more accurate answers, lower cost, and less risk of made-up facts.

Automatically updated index

The index is updated when you save content and can run automatically via a scheduled task — so the chat stays in sync with your site.

Security and privacy

  • The OpenAI API key is stored encrypted on your server
  • Visitors’ chat logs are not saved in the database
  • Rate limiting protects against misuse
  • The assistant is instructed not to invent facts — if the answer is not in the index, it says so and suggests contacting you

Swedish and English

The plugin has built-in Swedish translation when the site or user language is Swedish. The assistant responds in the same language as the visitor writes — Swedish or English.

FAQ

Are visitors’ chat logs saved?
No. Questions are processed in real time and are not stored in the database.

What content is indexed?
The website name and tagline, optional extra knowledge, published pages and — if you want — blog posts, categories, tags, and public post types.

Do I need an OpenAI subscription?
You need an OpenAI account and an API key. The cost is based on usage and controlled by you.

Can I test before publishing?
Yes. There is a built-in test chat in the admin once the index has been built.

Does it work in Swedish?
Yes. The admin and chat support Swedish, and the assistant responds in the same language as the visitor writes.
